MATH/CS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Name: Paul E. Varnum
Class: 1986
Degree: B.S. Computer and Mathematical Sciences
Favorite LSSU class: I don't recall the name of the class, but it was an introduction to Database fundamentals. Professor Boger was the instructor. It was my first introduction to database normalization and structured query language.
Further education: Oracle DBA training and several application development classes.
What I have done since LSSU: I worked for a year in Petoskey, MI at Memory Lane systems developing a Real Estate Title Insurance application and also did training for the State Of Michigan Employment services. I then moved to Pontiac, MI and went to
work for AirNet Systems. I have been with them for 21 years and we have since relocated the corporate headquarters to Columbus, OH.
Employment: Database Administrator/Software Engineer, AirNet Systems, Columbus,
Ohio.
Wish I would have done differently: How lucky I was to attend LSSU. We really had some great
instructors while I was there and for that I am truly grateful.
Hobbies: I Golf as often as possible. I have also become a huge fan of Blues
Music and have started making annual trips to a few Blues Festivals and try to make it to Beale Street in Memphis at least once a year.
If you have never been give it a try!
Best advice I have received: My division officer in the US Navy told me to go to
college versus re-enlisting since my intent was to join for 4 years and get the GI Bill to put myself through school.
Thanks to him I found LSSU.
Advice I would give: Enjoy your time there and keep at it. Sometimes I felt
that I wasn't going to make it through certain classes (Calc V, Real Analysis...) but I just kept at it.
It will pay off for you! Good Luck to all of you.
We need you!
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department is featuring alumni from its programs. The idea is for mathematics and computer science alumni to share what they have been up to since graduation. In order to make this work, we need alumni to participate. It doesn't matter if it was just a year ago or if you're a graduate from many decades back, we hope you will take part in this feature. If you graduated from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, simply fill out the form here. Thanks.
