MATH/CS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Name: Nick Baker

Class: 1990

Degree: B.S. Computer and Mathematical Sciences
and Mathematics

Favorite LSSU class: The class that has turned out to be the most useful to me was the class Tom Boger taught called Database Structures and Administration. While Microsoft continues to enhance Microsoft SQL Server those basic principles about relational databases, how to query them, and how to administrate them still apply.

Further education: Additional Studies in Mathematics & Statistics at Oklahoma State University; Additional studies for MS in Career Technicial Education Administration at Ferris State University; Jenzabar EX Administrator Certified; SPSS PowerUser Certification

What I have done since LSSU: I married my college sweetheart, Dawn Horn. We have two children together. Brittany, 10 and Brendan, 7.

Employment: Director of Institutional Research,
Kirtland Community College,
Roscommon, Michigan.

Hobbies: All of my away from work time is focused around my family. I actively support my daughter, Brittany, in her ballet, jazz and tap dance classes and recitals. My son, Brendan, #6, is in travel ice hockey playing for Gladwin. For me, it is a rewarding experience coaching in the Mite hockey program at Gladwin. Brendan says "one day, I'll play for the Lakers". We also enjoy traveling having recently been to Hawaii and all of the Disney theme parks in Florida.

Best advice I have received: "Never give up".

Advice I would give: Enjoy your time at Lake Superior State University. Always remember that your learning experience while there is not limited to the classroom, I encourage you to participate in as many campus activities/events as you can. Be flexible enough to adapt to change and never give up.

We need you!

The Mathematics and Computer Science Department is featuring alumni from its programs. The idea is for mathematics and computer science alumni to share what they have been up to since graduation. In order to make this work, we need alumni to participate. It doesn't matter if it was just a year ago or if you're a graduate from many decades back, we hope you will take part in this feature. If you graduated from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, simply fill out the form here. Thanks.
