MATH/CS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Name: Joyel Hyvarinen
Class: 2005
Degree: B.S. Mathematics / Secondary Education
Favorite LSSU class: All of the mathematics courses I took. I teach math for a living so they have all been very valuable to me.
Further education: Masters in Mathematics Education from Northern Michigan University (2005).
What I have done since LSSU: I have been teaching at my Alma Mater Brimley High School. I was hired right after graduation and have not stopped. I've also coached various sports teams including the U.P. State Champions and Regional for 2008 in girls track :) This was the first time in school history. I am also very involved in my church, Living Word, as I am the youth leader there.
Employment: Teacher and Math Department Head at Brimley H.S.
Hobbies: I recently began hunting and shot my first deer two years ago. I also rejoined the ranks of fishing this past summer. I forgot how much fun it was. I also enjoying riding my bike and discovering something new on the TI graphing calculators.
Best advice I have received: Sometimes as a teacher/coach young people will break your heart - they're young - forgive them, forget "it" and love them anyways! - Coach John Akkanen
Advice I would give: Enjoy the smaller university atmosphere and take advantage of it.
We need you!
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department is featuring alumni from its programs. The idea is for mathematics and computer science alumni to share what they have been up to since graduation. In order to make this work, we need alumni to participate. It doesn't matter if it was just a year ago or if you're a graduate from many decades back, we hope you will take part in this feature. If you graduated from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, simply fill out the form here. Thanks.
