MATH/CS ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT
Name: Edward (Hank) McClure
Class: 2004
Degree: B.S. Mathematics / Secondary Education
Favorite LSSU class: I think that all the extra math courses that I took above my secondary education degree were useful. During my senior year at LSSU, I decided to go to graduate school to obtain my MA in Pure Mathematics. I feel that extra classes, like Advanced Calculus, helped prepare me for such an endeavor. Also, my Computer Science Methods course with Dr. Schemm will soon prove very useful as I have been given the chance to set up a computer science curriculum complete with new hardware/software next fall.
Further education: MA in Pure Mathematics/WMU, Secondary Education Certification/LSSU
What I have done since LSSU: After graduation I went to WMU and earned a MA in Pure Mathematics. During this time, I met and married my beautiful wife, Melissa, and we began a family. Our son, Jayden Alexander, was born this past December, while I was completing my student teaching through LSSU to gain my Secondary Education Certificate. I worked at LSSU as a Mathematics Instructor for one semester
Employment: Currently teaching high school math at Les Cheneaux Community Schools in Cedarville, Michigan.
Hobbies: I enjoy spending time with my family and watching my son grow. Family is very important to me and is the reason I looked only for employment in the Midwest. I also enjoy gaming, golf, and board games.
Best advice I have received: I don't know that it was advice; but one of my instructors at LSSU told me that even though I had the highest grade in the class he expected more from me, so no one in the course would be receiving an A. This opened my eyes and made me realize that I needed to apply myself. It isn't enough just to stay ahead of the crowd when you are capable of so much more. I understand now that this helped further my career both as a student and as a professional.
Advice I would give: Don't wait to learn the hard way. Take it upon yourself to achieve greatness. You are capable of more than you think; everyone around you can see it and you need to fully apply yourself to become the best you can be.
We need you!
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department is featuring alumni from its programs. The idea is for mathematics and computer science alumni to share what they have been up to since graduation. In order to make this work, we need alumni to participate. It doesn't matter if it was just a year ago or if you're a graduate from many decades back, we hope you will take part in this feature. If you graduated from the Mathematics and Computer Science Department, simply fill out the form here. Thanks.
